2 PhD students in Hydrology (Uni Zürich, Uni Freiburg i.Br)
Starting date: 1. January 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter
Withinthe framework of the National Research Programme NRP 61 “SustainableWater Management”, ETH Zürich, University of Zürich, WSL (allSwitzerland), and the University of Freiburg i.Br. (Germany) willcollaborate on the three-year research project:
Drought-CH:Early recognition of critical drought and low-flow conditions inSwitzerland - coping with shortages in soil moisture, groundwater andrunoff
Theproposed project aims at the characterization and early recognition ofcritical drought and low-flow conditions in Switzerland, and willprovide the scientific basis for the development of an information andearly warning platform for drought and low-flow.
Thetwo PhD students in Catchment Hydrology will work on thecharacterization of various aspects of hydrological drought based onthe analysis of meteorological and hydrometric data, intensive stableisotope sampling in several test catchments across Switzerland,hydrological modeling and regionalisation of important droughtcharacteristics to larger regions. One PhD is expected to focusresearch efforts more strongly on the characterization of catchmentstorage using isotope methods while the other is expected to focus onhydrological modelling aspects. Both will collaborate with the entireproject team to integrate all aspects of analysis and modelling towardsbetter low flow prediction. An exchange of the PhD students betweenFreiburg and Zürich is planned. Applicants should indicate theirpreference to focus either on isotope hydrology or on hydrologicalmodelling. Applicantsshould have a Diplom or MSc degree in hydrology, meteorology, or aclosely related field. We encourage applications from enthusiasticdedicated individuals with strong quantitative skills as well as goodwriting skills who enjoy working in a team. We offer aninterdisciplinary, international work environment and formal PhDprogrammes. Salary is according the salary scale of the Swiss NationalScience Foundation (SNF).
